Edwardian, 1901 to 1920s
Antique hand painted, gilded and lacquered Chinoiserie pencil box. Made of wood, finished in black and cinnabar lacquer with gilded accents. Cover depicts a group of men lounging. Two are performers jesting about. Another figure is at the very right of the scene and appears to be praying. Nicely detailed scene with wall decorations and a lantern with details.
This Chinoiserie pencil box has 3 interior compartments. Overall measurements are 7 7/8" by 2 1/4" by 1 1/8". Base is 7 3/4" by 2". Great for your desk or dresser.
Condition is good for the age, estimated to date from the 1910's, maybe earlier. There are small areas of loss, wear to the bottom and one corner of the cover, which are consistent with age and regular use.
