Antique early Victorian bar pin shaped as a snake or viper centered by a medallion depicting a centurion. Beautiful face with great detail, the centurion appears to be carved out of the metal. The slithering snake is well detailed too, textured to imitate the scales.
The brooch is made of low grade silver. It is not plated but not sterling, likely 800 silver.
It measures 2.5″ long and is 7/8″ tall at the center of the medallion.
The lovely patina enhances every detail. It is not recommended to dip this pin in silver cleaning solutions.
The hardware in the back is brass, and somewhat primitive, indicating this brooch was likely made by hand or at least assembled by hand.
It is unisex in style and better suited for heavier fabrics due to the thickness of the pin stem. Unsigned and unmarked, carefully tested.
