Sampson Mordan SM&Co London – Antique Sterling Silver Vanity Dresser Powder Jar
This exquisite powder jar presents beautifully. The hinged sterling silver is adorned with a repousse motif of birds and flowers. There is a blank circle at the center for an initial to be engraved. The cut crystal is beautifully done.
The hinged lid works well, and the original cut glass stopper lid is present.
It is fully hallmarked with the SL&M maker’s stamp, the lion passant, the lion’s face for the city of London, and the capital letter U in a shield for the year 1895. The stamps are placed around the rim, towards the bottom of the lid on the outside.
There is a fracture line on the cut crystal. I tried to depict it in the many photos, but it is difficult because it is not obvious. There is also slight shading on the inside towards the base, likely from the previous content over these many years. I did not attempt to clean it.
There are no repairs. This condition is reflected in the price. This is an extremely rare piece.
There is some patina. We do not dip antique silver. We hand-polish. The patina enhances each delicate detail..
The jar measures 4 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. It weighs 12 ounces.
