An original November 1937 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, complete with 192 pages and its striking A. M. Cassandre Winter Fashions cover.
Cassandre’s spare, graphic design gives the issue immediate Art Deco appeal. Inside, Man Ray’s dramatic photography for a feature on The Red Badge of Courage is one of the magazine’s most striking visual elements; his photographs also appear in an editorial on hats.
Additional highlights include Coco Chanel modeling in her own advertisement on page 137, a Schiaparelli “Shocking” perfume advertisement, and a fabulous full-color double-page Chrysler automobile advertisement. Paulette Goddard—then Mrs. Charles Chaplin—is pictured wearing an aquamarine ring by Paul Flato. The issue also includes “Why Don’t You?” by Diana Vreeland. Carmel Snow was editor and Alexey Brodovitch art director.
