This stunning antique large Victorian pocket watch locket is hand chased and machine cut on both covers. The side frame is deeply carved with an elaborate vine pattern. Even the ring or bow at the top is engraved.
There are two covers, similar to a hunter case in a pocket watch. Both are exquisitely engraved and machine-turned. Each cover has a different design. They are solid 10k gold.
The locket is 1 11/16″ in diameter, 2 3/8″ tall, including the bow, and 3/8″ deep at the center. It is heavy at 31.7 grams.
The frame is made of thick gold filled or, more likely, gold over sterling. I tested it carefully, but any further testing will damage the surface. The frame is not solid gold like the covers.
It is not uncommon to have mixed metals in Victorian jewelry. The current standards were not in place until the 20th Century. They are often not marked as gold stamping was not required at the time, and jewelry production was not mass manufactured and standardized as it is today. Many are custom-made by a single jeweler or made by small jewelry companies.
There are no markings. Each element was carefully acid tested, individually.
The overall condition is excellent. There are no dents or deep scratches. Both covers stay closed and open easily. Please note the beveled glass is held by pressure. When the back of the locket is opened, care must be taken to keep it in place.
