Antique Belgium Lieges 1914 Lion Medal Pendant
Beautifully rendered by Pierre Theunis, it represents the invasion of Liege, Belgium, in 1914 thus starting WWI. It reads "Liège Waelhem Nieuport 1914" on one side and a quote from Julius Cesar on the other. The quote reads "Des touts le Gaulois, les plus braves son les Belges", loosely translating as "From all the Galic people, the bravest are those from Belgium." It is signed by the artist.
The pendant medal is 1 1/16" wide by 1 3/8" tall including the bail and ring. An identical one can be seen at the Yale art gallery at https://artgallery.yale.edu/collections/objects/170302
The condition is excellent, silver plated with a lovely patina.
