Gorgeous Maireener Shells come from Tasmania.
Beautiful iridescence in blue and green.
Traditionally, these were made by Aborigine women.
These shells are not iridescent when found.
Rubbing them to remove the outer layer reveals their beauty.
We have no indication that these were made by Aborigine women or that they were not.
Found with a group of shell necklaces from the first half of the 20th Century.
It is strung on thick cord, perhaps waxed cotton.
Overall length is approximately 70″.
Average shell size is 3/8″ or 10mm.
This length was popular in the Art Deco era.
Excellent condition.
