Vintage 1940’s Navy Sweetheart Locket Necklace – Gold over Sterling
During WW2, non-precious metals were used in the war effort. Base metals were scarce and replaced with sterling silver in the manufacturing of gold-filled jewelry. This lovely locket is one of them, made of gold filled with a sterling silver base instead of the most commonly used alloy, brass.
It is lovely, fairly large at 1.5″ tall including the custom bail by 1″ at the widest point. It was found with a 28″ long rope chain necklace which completes the necklace perfectly. The whole ensemble weighs approximately 10.9 grams.
The chain closes with a delicate filigree clip clasp that is very secure. It is marked 1/20 12k GF.
The mark on the locket can be seen when opened. It reads “1/20 12k on Sterling”.
The condition is very good for both with light wear and signs of age – the chain is older than the locket. The locket inner frames are missing, photos will need to be held by pressure.
